ALL GOOD PR from SLOW MAGAZINE
Monday June 6th at the Marquee, Cattlemarket Street, Norwich. 7.30 – 11.0pm, £4.00 door
On Monday 6th June 2005, Slow Magazine will be hosting a rare chance to see Matt Elliott, performing tracks from his new album Drinking Songs, which was recently released by the French label Ici D’Ailleurs. Matt will be joined on this occasion by friends and collaborators Manyfingers and Thee, Stranded Horse for an evening of exploratory electronic folk music.
MATT ELLIOTT
On his ninth record in as many years, Matt Elliott has left behind the claustrophobic swarms of electronic textures of earlier releases such as Semtex (1996) and You Guys Kill Me (1998). The man behind 90s avant drum’n’bass alias THIRD EYE FOUNDATION has relocated from Bristol to France, and in the process has discovered a new seam of inspiration in European and Slavic folk music, which forms the predominant mood on Drinking Songs. Having previously recorded for a range of labels including Linda’s Strange Vacation, Planet, and Domino, Matt has found a new home with Ici D’Ailleurs and is set to continue making thoughtful and thought-provoking music.

MANYFINGERS
Manyfingers is the work of Chris Cole, long time mover within the Bristol scene and master instrumentalist on a myriad albums from artists both known and unknown (notable examples being Movietone and Crescent) - most recently on Matt Elliot’s superb The Mess We Made album for Domino. His debut album as Manyfingers is soundtrack music at its most evocative - an alchemical journey into audio imagery, with detuned pianos, accordions, flutes, reversed guitars, xylophones and creepy atmospheres that congregate around the suggestion that life really can be elsewhere. It’s hard to believe that the delicate cacophony at play on each of the tracks is the work of just one set of hands. Close your eyes and you’ll imagine a room full of rogue musicians stretching their arms and preparing their many fingers, hundreds of them in fact, to tease and caress the strange and wonderful objects and instruments at their disposal - all in pursuit of perfection.
On the task of recreating his music live, he says “The premise is to make things as hard and as complicated for myself as I possibly can. I intend to fall over any number of instruments on stage, lose my notes and have a confused look on my face for most of the show as I look for the xylophone beater...”

THEE, STRANDED HORSE
Yann Tambour, the author/composer/performer who hides behind Thee, Stranded Horse, was born in 1978. He grew up in Normandy, in a family with little love of music. At the age of 7 he learnt classical guitar. At high school, he set-up different pop groups, in which he sang in both French and English. It was through his friends that he got his musical education, discovered Joy Division, the Velvet Underground, Nick Drake and Palace. On returning to the faculty, he found himself alone to record pieces on his 4-track recorder, with some little synthesizers on which he put French lyrics. He next moved to technology, first using a family computer, on which he installed music software and directed himself progressively to the composition of instrumentals, and has released music on the labels Active Suspension and Clapping Music under the name of Encre. The music is constructed by a guitar (acoustic or electric) and samples (a range of samples of songs which already exist) diverse: drums, strings, brass, piano and various noises. Despite this Yann Tambour refrains from making electronic music, arguing that the fact of using a sequencer doesn’t place his music automatically in this category, and that according to him “generating sounds from a computer or an instrument comes out the same. Yann will present his new project Thee, Stranded Horse. He will perform a few folk songs solo on Kora (a West African 24-string Harp/Lute) and guitar. A debut 7" inch will be released on Clapping Music May 31st 2005. Strictly limited to 500 copies, this record will mostly be available through the Clapping Music website and at Thee, Stranded Horse shows.
