You might not necessarily see yourself as a potential dancehall star
throwing out the latest dance moves in a sweaty Kingston nightclub, but no
reason to turn a blind eye to this oft-overlooked genre, especially
when the cream of today's electronic luminaries (Aphex, Luke Vibert,
Rephlex, Venetian Snares, Soundmurderer, Shadetek and the list goes on) are
currently mining it to great effect. High time to check out some of the
releases below, or to browse under DANCEHALL to find more in Warpmart. Don't
forget the dancehall competition we just launched too, more details below.

REPHLEX have kicked up a real storm in 2003, and their latest coup is a
collaboration with the BBC. This collection of music from the Radiophonic
Workshop will cause you to splutter with delight and amazement, much as the
original listeners of Radio Nottingham must have done when they first heard
the odd noodlings of John Baker before the weather report. Essential
purchase, especially given it's limited pressing, and lush 4 x 10" format.

You may or may not have heard of SONIC TERROR but these folk have been
gathering up great reviews by the bundle. The releases speak for
themselves - the Joseph Nothing (also records for Planet Mu) 7" is
particularly choice.

BASIC FLANNEL OFFER
Warpmart are now offering the opportunity to own the very scarce BASIC
FLANNEL CD, a special mix constructed by Mark Bell to celebrate the launch
of the new LFO album SHEATH. A range of classics from the Warp and LFO
catalogues are squished together by Mark, whose DJ sets are pretty legendary
in themselves.
Please scroll down to find a tracklisting. The CD will be given away with
ALL orders where the value of the items (not including post and packing) is
over 50 POUNDS. A chance to get those Christmas gifts in early. Hmm. We will
post a note on the site and remove this offer when we begin to run out of
the CDs, of which we only have a very limited supply.

3. Other news
To coincide with the new dancehall music in Warpmart, we are initiating a
special Warpmart competition, which gives you the chance to win £50 pounds
worth of ANY Warpmart music. All you have to do is to send us your own
homemade, DIY effort at producing a 'rhythm' for any one of the accapellas
from the new ragga 12" www.warprecords.com/?mart=RAC001, or for any
accapella that you might already have or get off the internet. Simply transport
the vocal into your sequencer, work out the BPM and get going, or alternatively,
mash the whole thing up through granular synthesis in Reaktor, or anything you
like really. Then send the results to the address below:
Dancehall Rhythm Competition,
Warpmart,
PO BOX 25378,
London,
NW5 1GL
The closing date is December 31st, and the winner will be announced on
Monday 5th January. The winner will receive £50 pounds worth of Warpmart
vouchers, and two runners up will receive 2 Warp albums of their choice.
Also, the winners will have their efforts posted up on Warpmart for a bit,
obviously. A chance to gain a bit of notoriety there then.
If you feel the need for inspiration, why not peruse the now extensive
dancehall and reggae collection now available in Warpmart? First up there
are the specific dancehall releases that we stock: 7"s directly from
Jamaica, from the likes of Elephant Man, Beenie Man, TOK and more. Then
there are Soundmurderer (on both Rephlex and Violent Turd Records), The Bug
and DJ Scud who mash these sounds to oblivion. Then check the labels
SHOCKOUT and MASHIT, both devoted to such enjoyable sonic destruction.
