Sandwell District have been favourites of ours since way back when Function and Regis were operating individually. One of the few crews in the world who understand how to rock a crowd whilst still retaining musical sensitivity, they will be flying over from Berlin to show why they are championed by everyone from Jeff Mills to Modeselektor to Marcel Dettman. They are perhaps the leading underground Techno label out there and they have not just blurred the boundaries of techno, but have dissolved and re-built them in their own unique image. Function and Regis themselves need little introduction; as stalwarts of the hugely influential Downwards Label they have musicality imprinted in their DNA. Sandwell District is out there on it's own and although it shares many of its ideals and energy with the iconic Downwards, it is very much a label of the here and now, and dare we say it, future times. Check out their Resident Advisor podcast here.
Long time techno producers Patrick Walker and Smear have teamed up to become Forward Strategy Group, and this pairing has resulted in them releasing two classic records, with another on the way. Seriously hot property over the last year, their live show is not to be missed. As soon as we heard them playing at Detatched in Leeds last year, we knew we had to have them down to rock Corsica's mighty rigs. Check out Resident Advisor's review of the already-classic 'Applied Generics' here. Definitely guys to watch for the future!
Peverelist aka Tom Ford is a dubstep institution; running Rooted Records in Bristol and producing classic tracks such as 'Erstwhile Rhythm' and 'Roll With The Punches'. He released his astonishing debut album, 'Jarvik Mindstate' to wide critical acclaim on his own label, Punch Drunk, at the tail end of last year and he has been getting high praise for his incredible DJ sets. We've been trying to get Tom down for years (literally!) and we are VERY excited to finally have him headlining our second room. Check out his recent appearance with Reso on the Mary Anne Hobbs show here.
The two-step Garage-influenced dubstep styles seem to be everywhere at the moment; one of the people who is leading that charge is Romanian Cosmin Nicolae, aka TRG. He has been absolutely smashing it recently, with headline slots at the Bricks warehouse party and Cargo's Friday setting tongues wagging at his ability to get even the most leaden of feet moving! His debut double-pack on Tempa, 'Now You Know' is released Feb 8th. Check out his Fact Magazine mix here.
One of techno's true underground heroes, Function aka Dave Sumner has been DJing and making music for over 15 years. Hailing from New York, he was seduced by techno music when Jeff Mills held a residency at the Limelight in the early 90s. Dave started to produce music and from the mid 90s onwards, put out music on Damon Wild's Synewave and his own Infrastructure imprint. Together with Karl O'Connor aka Regis he worked as Portion Reform, putting out uncompromising music on Downwards and becoming the only non-Birmingham producer to release on the label. Now a Berlin resident, he is still showing the innovation that made the techno world sit up and take notice. Check his recent interview and mix with Time Out New York here.
Scotsman Rauridh Law aka The Village Orchestra aka TVO is one of our favourite producers in the world right now. His 'Dark Is Rising' EP on stuffrecords is one of those records that never strays too far from our record bags and 2010 will likely belong to him! A mighty fine DJ and formerly of the widely respected Marcia Blaine School For Girls, he will be dropping a live/DJ set that I cannot wait for. Check out his Liquid Dictation mix here (part 1) and here (part 2).
We are delighted that Subeena is making a return visit to Plex; her last time around was at our second birthday in November 2008. Since then she's been making waves with her unique take on electronic music. Following the astonishing 'Solidify' 12" on Planet Mu, she is now about to launch a new label named OPIT Records which promises more sophisticated and beautiful music from this talented 24 year old. Check out an interview and mix with her from Bass Music Blog here.
One of the best turntable DJs we've ever heard is Bobby Corridor. He is a gob-smackingly good DJ, able to masterfully blend any style of music he puts his dextrous hands to. A true master of the turntables - simply check out his Spring Cleaning mix and prepare to be amazed! Check out his blog here.
One of our good friends and allies is Kirsti Weir. She's now making quite a name for herself as a DJ, promoter and writer. Check out her blog, null+void for lots of exclusive mixes and the lowdown on what's going on around town.
As another of our cohorts and long time supporters, Calpor will be kicking off things on the night with a set that is bound to be wide-ranging and slickly mixed; check out his mixes here.
Topping off that mighty bill is Crux who is sure to pull something special out of the bag for this night... check his sets on Ill FM here.
All of this as well as the ever-capable Plex DJ squad...
This lineup is a whole festival of music in one night, at the ever-friendly, bass-quaking Corsica Studios! This is going to be a ROADBLOCK so make sure you GET THERE EARLY!
