For more information visit www.aldeburgh.co.uk or www.fasterthansound.com.The highlight of the first event is a co-commission and special collaboration with the Sonar Festival in Barcelona and follows an Aldeburgh Residency with electronic artist Tim Exile and composer Jon Hopkins. The duo will create pieces for Roland Olbeter's Soundclusters, an ensemble of five music-playing robots (two violins, viola, cello and percussion) that follow orders from a midi controller.
During Faster Than Sound the robots will perform the new pieces in a live co-operation between man and machine. This will be mirrored by the world premiere of a string quartet by Salvatore Sciarrino, performed by the Prometeo Quartet.
The line-up is completed by vocal ensemble EXAUDI performing Alvin Lucier, a world premiere by Amber Priestley and Paul B Davis.
