Job fears as Hemsby holiday camp closes

The Pontins holiday camp in Hemsby was shutdown for good today due to falling visitor numbers and rising costs.

Ocean Parcs, which owns the site, said that 55 staff may be affected by the decision to close the camp, which has been a popular holiday destination for many years.

In March Ocean Parcs bought the Hemsby Pontins and five other sites, including one at Pakefield, near Lowestoft, for £46m.

But the company says it has to close the camp because it is not worth investing in, has rising operating costs and is suffering from a decline in visitor numbers.

A spokeswoman said: “It is with regret that we have come to this decision. The management and staff have worked hard over the years to provide great holidays at this centre.

“We chose to announce this now so that as few as possible holiday makers would be disappointed and give us much time as possible to make alternative plans.”

No matter how amazing Minehead will be in terms of modernity, Hemsby will always be the perfect setting for that particular weekend of madness. Even the main stages were perfect.

Maybe we should have a whip round and sustain it as Hemsby Acid City?
