bad news for users of the Kafe Da

We just had a call from Kafe Da (sorry, Alley Katz) cancelling our booking for 30th June *Bogdan Raczynski/Soundmurderer/Miami Beat Alliance* because of these reasons:

1. the venue is now (I shit you not) "a jazz club" and will not take bookings for anything not considered jazz/adid jazz/funk - this includes house/hard house/dnb/electronica etc etc, and presumably the electr/indie stylings of NPUC friday are similarly unwanted.

2. yes, they are trying to shake their reputation (and make pilled up ravers homeless)

3. they still have no late licence and are going to crown court appeal in the near future, once they've managed to convince everyone that they really do like jazz and provide a useful late nite service for the sophisticated clientele that they are praying for.

we will relocate our show - hope NPUC can manage the same, especially after the Ferryboat thing. more news when we have news.

Thats pretty shit, with that and the lock stock situation looking pretty bad, Norwich is running out of any venues for independant promoters to put nights on.

It just annoys me how fucking little the club owners/managers seem to know about their target audience, retarded ideas like drug amnesty boxes after the bouncers, hiring dicks for doormen and now turning Kafe Da into a jazz club, yeah thats gonna work.

Anyone want to place bets on how long before their anti-everythingthatisntjazz stance will last? Give it 2/3 months and they'll be going out of business.

I was well looking forward to seeing both Bogdan and Soundmurderer again as well, good luck finding a new venue.

I am really surprised at kafe da going down that route. With the late license and the refurb. complete I thought it was going to be a great venue available to promoters to showcase the diversity of music in Norwich. Sadly I was wrong. Unless the business-yups hook onto the reinvented schjaaazzzbar it will definitely be dragging a dead-dog.

It does seem as though we have a dwindling population of the lesser-spotted good venue in Norwich at the moment. Very best of luck getting relocated, I am really looking forward to that show. If not, I say marquee and phat ole' sound system somewhere or other.

Many a good electronica and hardcore dub night had in kafe da over the years. R.I.P.

Lets see, in Norwich we now have:

Kafe "We're a poncy jazz club now" Da
Lock "We hire bouncers that kicked in the promoters of its only saving grace (bar uncollected)- Genetica" Stock
Spen "The only good thing about it are the awesome Chalet nights, and the uncollecteds boys won't get in anymore cos the bouncer is a cunt "cers
Water "Too fucking expensive (unless you only get upstairs)" Front
UE "couldn't hope to fill it" A
Light "Pimps and ho's dying in the toilet" Bar

Have I missed anything?

to be fair (and I am struggling to be fair here) the Kafe Da goes jazz thing is a last ditch effort to persuade the local licencing authorities to back them - they have been refused a late licence as I type this - and "oh this will just be a nice jazzy wine bar" is a barely concealed attempt to change image for the purposes of being allowed late drinking. Who knows if this will work though, as this city is hardly crying out for trendy bars is it? Maybe they should heve been honest about the whole thing and just renamed it the Burberry Lounge.

I am really sad about losing the venue though, we had ten shows there in the last 18 months or so and it really felt like home for Slow. Funny that we were offered Owens as a replacement though, as the rooms are smaller and the reputation bigger.

I don't really like Spencers much cos you can't see anything of the performance (and we tend to pick those crazy stage acts), plus the sound isn't great. Let's all start hiring the Loft!

This is alot of nasty news all at once for me, wah!
was really looking forward to bogdan would have been a brilliant night seeing as sound murderers and M.B.A where gonna be there too.
Alley catz??? yeah i thought refurbs were ment to make places look better but from the outside it looks like they got first year gcse art students to come up with the idea of the sign.
Good luck with finding a new venue, attempting to cross everything in the hope that a new venue is found soon.

Damn, i was really looking forward to this show like most, hope you can find a new venue in time coz I might cry if i miss out.

Seeing kafe da with its refurb with pastel green and white walls......chrome and polished wood all over it was looking quite upmarketly gay and the change of name makes it sound like it might be trying to give the loft a run for thier money, which they prolly should do coz a gay bar has prolly got more money in it than a jazz bar. on the subject of the loft.....I recon it would be quite a good venue, getting a lot of sweaty ravers packed into the little stage area, and its got quite a bit of room.

I had the misfortune of walking past it yesterday. Nasty.

I've never really considered the Loft before as a venue, I think of it and immediately think Friday night = Marvel or Gas Station but it could have potential. Do they rent out the entire thing?

loft etc

not sure if they hire out the whole thing (the Loft) but I don't see why not, and it would be pretty good for a laptoppy/DJ hiring I reckon. I have yet to see the new not Kafe Da, though hear it resembles an indian restaurant from the outside. As for our Bogdan show - see my other topic - it's back on and you're all invited (to give us a fiver).

what about mustard (I think that is what it is called-its the place near mc donalds) that seems to be quite a nice venue and i dont think it is that expensive. Are you guys putting on the next uncollected at the waterfront? Also when is analogue windmill, anyone know anything? And (I know you shouldnt start sentences with and but oh well) is that thing this friday going ahead still where Ed is playing if da isnt putting on nights anymore?

from what I have heard (admittedly a while ago) the Mustards aren't too keen on anything all that "different" taking place in their establishment. This is based on what I heard about the people doing Maggi nights (remember that? A monthly electro/fashion night aimed at and featuring Shoreditch twats that lasted for one month only and then disappeared). They were told that it wasn't really what the Mustards were after = not funky house enough??

I've never been to Mustard but would consider it if they would just take the hire money and let us all get on with it, but I doubt that would be the case.

Friday thing is now at Owens (next to the Bell) and the electronische line up is unchanged. Slow are apparently DJing outside so just follow the sounds of showtunes. Get in early though, it's smaller than you think.

Bogdan/Soundy/MBA now upstairs at Waterfront, and despite their leaflets it's only a fiver to get in (not £15 like they say)

ahah, I never knew about the one-month-lasting-Norditch-night. No surprise it crashed and burned though. There is that regular night at Mustard from the same person who does the Volkswagen summer thing (his name and the name of the night completely evades me at the moment), but as you say, I think he goes for more middle of the road selection with a bit of hiphopsoulfunkjazzetcetcetc.

I caught something about Owens on Friday night the other day, sounds like a whole bunch of people will be performing there with quite a ranging style of music.

How is everyone going fit though? The ground floor inside (as I remember) couldn't really accomodate a band and downstairs is styled like a beach last time I was there with real sand on the floor and everything!

It'll be good to have you guys deejaying some electronic beats a stonesthrow away from a Friday night at the Bell though, hehehe.
