I've just started using Reason but I've been told FL Studio is better. Which is better for what? Are there any other recommendations?

Other recommendations include Ableton Live, Cubase SX, and Logic (for Mac). Reaktor and Renoise are there if you want to get a bit more hands on.

FL studio is brilliant, i've used loads of software but always end up going back to Flstudio because it can do everything i want it to (and more) faster than in other programs. Loads of unique features too. Converted all my house mates to it, who were using Cubase and Sonar before...

i used to use cubase before but fl definitely has an advantage for being able to do things a lot faster and easier imo.
i have heard some people complain about the sound quality not being as good as more expensive software, i've never had anyone say that about anything i've made with it though.
anyone else get this from people?

The whole sound quality thing is a big pile of rubbish. Waveform inversion tests prove there is no difference.
It just comes from people's idea that FL is just a "toy". It did start off as a very basic midi sequencer, but it's had 10 years worth of development since then. It's also partly due to the fact that FL's channels default to 75% volume to avoid clipping, which is lower than default level in other sequencers, and humans perceive higher volume as better quality.
In fact comparison tests with other sequencers show that it's sinc interpolation (quality of resampling) and antialiasing results are slightly better than other sequencers:
http://www.simonv.com/tutorials/quality.php
The results in that test are of its old sinc depth of 64, it goes up to 512 now.
Also it being fairly cheap automatically gives people the impression it will be of poor quality.

I've put out plenty of tunes using the old faithful Fruity Loops. It's an easy way to get a quick result. Bit of a nightmare if you're using any midi inputs though.....
