! ALIAS is flying in from GERMANY just for this gig!!! How amazing is
that? Apparantly WHY? told Alias what an awesome crowd we are here in
Norwich, so he's flying back over just for the one date in Norwich. If you
enjoyed Why? at the Marquee a few months ago, here's a chance to see one of their label-mates. This should be an amazing night, so do remember to turn up!

Anticon Record's hip-hopmeister making beats and electro bleeps laced with
poetic prose rap. If it wasn't for Theo Huxtable, Brendon Whitney (Alias)
might still be living in the woods of Southern Maine. Raised by a church
organist and a firefighting jazz drummer, little Bren never had cable
television. With only three general stores in town, the musical pickings
were slim, so Bren would stay up combing their five TV channels for some
sort of sign. And that was when he found Theo hosting NBC's 'Friday Night
Videos'. Specifically, it was Special Ed's 'I'm the Magnificent' that did
it. Bren began buying every hip-hop magazine he could find, plastering the
walls of his bedroom with torn-out pictures of rappers feverishly grabbing
their crotches. His parents were unsure about the crotches, but supportive
of his passion, so on Christmas of 1992 they gave him his first drum
machine. Exit little Bren, enter big Alias.
In 1993, following words of wisdom from a hip-hop guru, Alias set up a
'studio' in a friend's basement, taught himself to use an MPC3000 and an
ADAT machine, and joined the ranks of the Live Poets. Later on, after
working with hip-hop masters Sole and Dose, Alias realized he had no
choice but to make music his entire life. He and his wife Jenn sold the
car, quit their jobs, packed everything into a U-Haul and headed out west.
They moved into an East Oakland warehouse with the rest of the Anticon's
first migratory wave, and here concocted his first opus-a rap-heavy,
poetic and brooding introspective called The Other Side of the Looking
Glass (2002). While touring with Themselves, Alias began crafting wordless
moodpieces out of live and electronic instrumentation. His Eyes Closed EP
and Muted LP featured rich atmospherics tied to a hip-hop pulse, guitars
and keys and tapped drums all rolling forward in one big ball of
gorgeousness.
Alias recently started his own label (Goodwithmoney Recordings) and is
currently putting the finishing touches on an album that he recorded with
singer Tarsier (of Brooklyn-based electronic duo Healamonster & Tarsier)
called Oaklyn/Brookland. He has collaborated with every member of the
Anticon roster, Sage Francis, Will Oldham, Saul Williams, DJ Krush, Ben
Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie/The Postal Service), Styrofoam, and members
of the Notwist. He has done remixes for Lali Puna, Lunz, JD Walker, Lucky
Pierre, Deep Thinkers, Sixtoo, Giardini di Miro, Boy in Static, Christ.,
and The One AM Radio.

CHRIST.
Who better for Christmas?
Anyone wondering where all the good underground electronic music has gone
(which isn't just a mash of clicks and cuts) might want to get off at this
stop and check it out – Future Music
>From an early age Christ. has been a musician. His supposed collaborations
in his formative years at school and early 20s are well documented,
suffice to say that at the current point in time, determining the original
source of cross-pollinated styles is futile. Since his first solo release
proper in 2002, he has proved to be as individual and creative as the next
guy, forging a unique path of musical beauty that escapes derivation.
Can much more be said? What's the point. Christ.'s expert layers of
melody, broken beats and textures say pretty much everything, and along
with his popularity as a formidable live act, he is a rare breed indeed.
This bullet-point biography pretty much says it all.

POSTALOWA
Rare live performance from Norwich's own pioneers of mid-fi. Now seven
years old, the band are promoting their forthcoming fourth full-length
release, due out in 2006, and play a heady mixture of live guitars, looped
beats and slow-build lulls and highs.
